The Spanish town of Girona is best known due to its airport, where thousands of budget airline passengers land in order to reach the famous Catalan capital, Barcelona. However, gourmands know Girona for a different reason. It hosts the El Celler de Can Roca restaurant, which this year was named the best in the world.

The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is published annually since 2002. The restaurants are not rated based upon the number of Michelin stars, luxury or the chefs’ qualifications. Instead, they receive votes from thousands of international restaurant critics, journalist, famous chefs, gastronomes and restaurant owners from 27 regions of the world.

Winner of this year, the restaurant established by the Roca brothers - Joan and Josep - in 1986, has received three Michelin stars. The restaurant distinguishes itself with Catalan ingredients and the fusion of traditions with various preparation techniques. Dishes in this restaurant sometimes resemble pieces of surreal art, rather than a common dinner. Besides, it also has a wine cellar, where more than 60 000 bottles of wine are kept.

The restaurant is also famous for its participation in a cooking reality TV show - the Roca brothers were asked to judge contestants of a British TV show. This year‘s award isn‘t the first one received by El Celler de Can Roca – it was voted the best in 2013 as well.

Girona itself is a historical Catalan town with approximately 100 000 inhabitants. Tourists usually pay the town only a one-day visit when they want to escape noisy Barcelona. Its main attractions are the town’s cathedral, old fortifications, Sant Feliu and Benedictine churches, Independence Square, the banks of the Onyar river and the town’s Jewish heritage.
