Greece is one of the most popular countries in the world with tourists. It's no surprise when you consider the Ancient Greek civilization, historical monuments, thousands of islands, many blue sea lagoons, ample sunshine, fresh and natural food, and traditional Greek beverages. Another synonym for Greece, however, is economic crisis. This shouldn’t scare away travellers, though, as prices in this nature-endowed country are only going down.

Greek islands are the country’s main distinguishing feature. Here you’ll find not only the common Greek roots and heritage, but also something new and unique on every island. Some of these have become veritable entertainment centres; others are favourites with water sports enthusiasts; others are flocked by history buffs; yet others still are where couples and families with young children go looking for peace and quiet.

Crete, Kos, Rhodes, Corfu, Mykonos and Santorini are the most famous of the Greek islands. All of the islands that belong to Greece are exceptional, yet they’re all united in the high number of sunny days and excellent services for tourists. Greece was one of the first European countries to popularize holidays by the sea. Therefore, it’s not only the cradle of European history, but also the birthplace of tourism.

Even though most travellers choose not to spend too much time in Athens, this city is certainly worthy of your attention. First of all because here you’ll find the Acropolis – seen so many times on the pages of history textbooks – and many other monuments to the cradle of European civilization. Secondly, Greece is full of excellent restaurants, cafés, and places of entertainment. Moreover, the city of Athens is full of unstaged life that’s more chaotic than in most other European cities.

Thessaloniki is another large city that’s been undeservedly forgotten. Sometimes it’s even called the real capital of Greek culture. The city hosts many events, performances and festivals. So, regardless of the time of your arrival, you’ll always find yourself at the centre of action.

Mainland Greece is no less rich in interesting sights than the islands. The Meteora Monastery, Delphi, underground rivers and caves, cliffs, and mountains on which you can even go skiing during winter.

Finally, Greece is true paradise for food lovers. Olive oil, cheeses, fresh meat and seafood, and lots of tasty and ripe vegetables – together, these ingredients constitute the basis of the Greek cuisine.
