Where to Ski: Georgia – Exotica, Quality Service and Great Value for Money

Georgia – the most hospitable of the states of Caucasus – is famous not only for its supras, wine and ancient Aqsaqal traditions, but also as being a true paradise for mountain skiers. Georgian resorts may not be as large as those found in the Alps, but they’re certainly a decent alternative for those who seek exotica, as well as spectacular views and experiences for a reasonable price.

During recent years, stale mountain sports centres have turned into modern resorts. Every year, the government invests more and more into mountain skiing and resort infrastructure to attract new winter sports enthusiasts from abroad.

Local Mountains and Climate

Georgia’s mountain ski resorts are usually open November to early May. And even though the climate here is fairly soft, it can still get freezing cold up in the mountains. East Georgia is colder than West Georgia, however the conditions for skiing are good in both. In terms of climate, Georgia is quite lucky: the country is full of differently-sized Caucasian Mountains that protects it from continental cyclones. For this reason, while descending from the mountains people can enjoy the seaside sun and freshly-picked clementines.

Mountain Ski Resorts

Georgia has three main ski resorts that have no shortage of snow or Caucasian exotica: Mestia, Gudauri and Bakuriani. Moreover, just two years ago, a new ski resort was opened in the Adjara Region, near the seaside resort capital Batumi, called Goderdzi. This year, Svanetia Region’s second mountain ski resort Tetnuldi – named after the Tetnuldi Mountain – is also set to open its tracks as early as this year.

The thing that makes it worth skiing in Georgia is its interesting tracks. Given the capricious nature of the Caucasus Mountains, reaching some of the more remote tracks could still be rather difficult. However, low service prices, short lift queues and powerful mountains make Georgia an excellent winter holiday alternative.
