Ice hotels have been with us for quite a while time now and can be found in different countries. The first of its kind is the Swedish Icehotel, located in the village of Jukkasjärvi. However, it is not the only place in Europe, where one can experience such a “chilling” hotel. In this list, we‘re going to talk about the four best ice hotels in Europe.

1. Icehotel, Sweden

The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, is built from snow and ice from the nearby river Torn. Every spring, around March, Icehotel employees gather tons of ice from the frozen river Torn and store it in a nearby industrial hangar. This ice is then used to produce bar supplies and ice sculptures for presentations and shows all around the world. Some ice is left for the construction works of the hotel. Icehotel, known as one of Sweden‘s seven miracles, is open from December to April. The hotel‘s walls, ceilings, floors, beds, lamps, wine glasses and many other pieces of the interior are all made from real ice.

2. Kirkenes, Norway

This hotel was established close to the Russian border in 2006. Every year since, ice apartments, providing an opportunity to enjoy the comfortable frost, are built there. The hotel itself is formed from snow and ice, while the beds are traditional. Also, Lawo, a heated restaurant, is close to the hotel. The hotel‘s frozen doors open each year around the 20th of December.

3. The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland

Several thousand tons of snow and ice are used every year to build this hotel. This ice structure has been built in Lapland for eight years in a row now. In 2013, it was decided to expand the hotel‘s capacity to 30 double rooms. Ice rooms are shaped like igloos, where guests can always find sleeping bags, sheepskin and an instruction on how to defeat the “power of sleep”. After a cold night, hotel guests are treated with hot fruit tea.

If the frost bites too hard, guests can stay in warm underground rooms. The hotel hosts a bar and a restaurant. Ice sculptures dominate the hotel‘s interior.

Erected in 2006, the building instantly became a tourist attraction centre. Since then it has been rebuilt every year. This hotel in the Fageras Mountains has fourteen rooms, each decorated with originally illuminated sculptures. The temperature is constantly maintained at -2 °C, but those afraid of the cold need not worry, because the beds are covered with furs, and all guests are provided with quilts and sleeping bags. An ice bar, decorated with sculptures by Constantin Brâncuși, is open in the hotel. Strong alcoholic mixed drinks warm up the guests and prepare them for a special four-course dinner, served on ice plates. Each year an ice wedding chapel is constructed nearby the hotel. The hotel has ten rooms with king size double beds. One night in this extravagant hotel costs €37 per person.
