How Not to Give Yourself Away as a Tourist in the Cafés and Restaurants of Milan

Milan is not just Italy‘s business and fashion capital, but also a city that holds to its traditions – especially those related to food. If you want to feel like a local in Milan, take our advice!

  • Do not order cappuccino after 11 AM. In Milan, it‘s a breakfast drink that many locals find too heavy in the afternoon. Remember – Italians usually drink their cappuccino at the bar, rather than the table.

  • Don‘t forget that orders in Milan‘s bars and cafés are also taken a little differently. Firstly, check the menu, order something and pay at the till. Once you get the receipt, take it to the waiter or barman and he will bring you the food.
  • Avoid the cafés located around the overcrowded, touristy Galleria Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and the main cathedral of the city. The only pleasant exception is the café Zucca, although getting a table here can be difficult at any time of day.

  • Don't try to eat dinner in cafés and bars between 2:30 and 7:30 PM. Even if you manage to get served, the locals will find you peculiar. However…

  • If you find yourself starving, get some snacks – Milan is the fatherland of these. Order a drink before 6 PM and get pleasantly surprised at your glass of wine or beer coming with a plate full of rice-based snacks, pizza, ham, mozzarella cheese or olives.
